Ketamine-Assisted Therapy (KAT)

In many cases, KAT is approached primarily as a pharmaceutical intervention for alleviating psychological distress —notably severe depression. This approach tends to emphasize ketamine’s biochemical effects as the primary source of medicinal value. This has its own level of truth, and indeed many individuals suffering from acute depression can experience swift and often life-saving relief from ketamine infusions applied in this manner. I have witnessed this firsthand, and for many it is a blessing.

My approach, however, is different.

I emphasize the psychedelic properties of ketamine and its potentials to deepen and enhance the psychotherapeutic process. The focus here is less on the immediate psychological and emotional relief that ketamine can provide (though this may come into play), and more on the potential for ketamine to reveal deeper layers of the soul, affording contact with long-neglected parts of the self. This may lead to deepened insight and opportunities to consciously process dormant emotions.

You can read more about my approach to psychotherapy here, and about the structure of treatment here.

A Psychedelic Orientation to KAT

This approach to KAT may be for you, if:

  • You desire not only relief from psychological difficulties, but also deeper insight into the patterns or processes that can perpetuate suffering and stagnation

  • You are open to the full range of experiences that ketamine may catazlye—from the mild to the powerful, the beautiful to the difficult

  • You are seeking to discover what generative benefits may unfold through the interplay between psychedelic experience and a containing psychotherapeutic relationship
